Historical Commissions are the boards or committees of municipal government responsible for community-wide historic preservation planning. They are funded by the local city or town. This is not the type of historical society being proposed.
A Historical Society is a private, non-profit organization. Historical Societies preserve local history through house museums, maintaining collections, records, and public programs.
