Onset – Ferries, Boats, Yachts

Martha’s Vineyard –

The “Martha’s Vineyard” was a sidewheel steamer used as a ferry for Martha’s Vineyard. It stopped at Onset as an inbound and outbound passenger vessel.

Monohansett –

The “Monohansett” was a sidewheel steamer used as a ferry for Martha’s Vineyard. It stopped at Onset as an inbound and outbound passenger vessel.

An interesting fact is that she was used by General Ulysses S. Grant as a dispatch boat. President Abraham Lincoln and his wife, Mary, also spent on her.

Genevieve –

James L. Maloy

Built in 1864 in Miilford, Delaware and used up and down the northeast coast.

It did beach in Onset in 1926 and was there for 4 years. It was used as a tearoom.

In 1930, it was decided that it would be towed to Salem and used for the 300th anniversary of Massachusetts. The Onset Fire Department assisted in getting the schooner off the beach. Unfortunately, it sunk on the way in Marblehead Harbor. It stayed there for a long time and became a major headache for Marblehead. There is still a bit of research to be done to get a better idea of its stay in Onset. I do know it was eventually salvaged and lived no more.
